The Huawei Honor brand of smartphones has always been about quality and value. The latest device on of the Huawei Honor series, Huawei Honor 5C was announced in April 2016.  The device comes with a metal unibody design and it is an improvement on its predecessor, the Honor 4C. The company has a reputation of sticking to the mid-range price segment, and this device is no different. The phone has an average price in Kenya of about 25000 ksh. 

Look and feel

The Huawei Honor 5C unsurprisingly looks a lot like the Honor 5X, especially the brushed metal finish on the back of the device. Despite having a smaller display than Honor 5X, the device is a little bulkier and has smoothly rounded off edges that make it feel good to hold. This smartphone has a 5.2-inch high definition IPS LCD screen, smaller, thus easier to handle. The screen is moderately bright, and android buttons appear on the screen as there is no capacitive buttons on the phone. People who spend a lot of time outdoors and those that watch a lot of videos on a smartphone will find the screen a bit dull. The bulge of the rear camera lens is placed right in the middle. There is a composite SIM tray on the left-hand side of the device while the power and the volume buttons follow a standard layout on the right side. The 3.5mm jack port on the top with the micro-USB port and the speaker on the bottom side of the smartphone. The device a fingerprint sensor at the back which in addition to unlocking the phone, it can be used to access locked apps.

Camera

The Huawei Honor 5C comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. The primary camera has a single LED flash, and both cameras can record 1080p HD videos. The settings menu of the device’s camera feature has self-timer, smile capture, resolution and object tracking controls in addition to standard photography modes such as slow motion video, HDR, panorama and time-lapse video.

Software and other specifications

On top of Huawei’s EMUI 4.1, The Huawei Honor 5C operates on Android 6.0 marshmallow. There are a few changes to the older versions of the UI, but they are not easily noticeable, it is mostly the same old single layered UI with the exact signature look and feel. The operating system comes with its own set of advantages with features that enhance performance such as the revamped app permissions system, Doze mode for battery optimisation and the Now on Tap feature.

Summary

The Huawei Honor 5C is an excellent choice for people looking for a decent midrange smartphone and don’t care for a 5.5-inch screen. The Chinese company did a great job on improving the Honor 4C successor’s overall performance. The 3000 mAh featured by the phone gives more than 12 hours performance just like the Tecno Boom J8 and Infinix Hot. Given its price, there’s not a lot to complain about regarding this device.
