Snapchat new ‘Memories’ feature

Snapchat has introduced a new feature, which means new tricks. Sad, really, for most snapchat users, just when you thought you’d finally figured out how this app works. The app developers have introduced the memories feature to help you hold on to your videos and photos for a longer time. It is an archive of snaps that you can search and share via the snapchat app. Snapchat servers through the memories feature automatically compile saved snaps into different categories by location.  You can also access pictures and videos by searching the particular keyword such as ‘sports’. Before the update, to upload a photo to your followers as a part of your story, you had to take the photo directly through the app. With the new memories feature, you can now upload any video or image you want from your phone or elsewhere.
How does the ‘memories’ feature work?

To take a snap, open the updated snapchat app and click on the camera view. There is a capture key at the base of camera view, click or hold on it to take a picture or video. Tap download/save button to save your photo or video into memories.
To open memories, scroll up from the camera view. There is a menu bar consisting of several tabs on the memories screen, just below the search button on the top right corner. You will find the Camera Roll (displays your phone's complete camera roll), Stories (displays just your stories), Snaps (displays just your snaps), My Eyes Only (displays your protected memories) and All (displays all your saved photos and videos). You can tap and hold to enable interactions from any of these tabs. These interactions include sending snaps to friends as a message attachment, sharing to your current story, adding geo-filters and timestamps, editing, exporting and creating a new story by selecting multiple snaps.

Search for snaps by inputting the keyword on the search button on the top corner to open memories. To detect what is on your phone and serve the correct memories, the app uses object recognition from your device.

Hide explicit snaps using the ‘my eyes only’ tab. Just tap and hold the snap and click on the enable interaction option. To access locked snaps, you have to input the PIN. Do not forget the PIN since you cannot reset it using your email like you are used to. You can automatically set to ‘My Eyes Only’ by default or save stories to memories by navigating through the memories section to find the saving section and click on ‘save to’ and select ‘camera roll only’.

No backup for photos and videos from your camera roll
Snapchat will not back up any videos or photos from your camera roll. ‘Memories’ is backed up on snapchat servers. However, specific photos or videos from your snapchat stories or those set in ‘for my eyes only will be backed up by snapchat. This way, you can access your snaps even if you log into snapchat using a different device.
