OPPO, a new entrant in the domestic smartphone market, is causing stirs in the already competitive market. The company is proving to be a world-class smartphone manufacturer through the introduction of the world’s first swivel camera phone, the OPPO N3 and one of the world’s slimmest smartphones, the OPPO R5. With the debut of two new exciting smartphones; OPPO Neo 7 and OPPO R7s. OPPO is growing its product range. The company is looking to expand into other major towns in the country having opened over 60 points of sales in the city and surrounding areas. Let us see how R7s and Neo 7devices perform and if they will hold its own in this price category.

Camera

Neo 7: OPPO Neo 7 comes with a 5MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear shooter. Both cameras come with a GIF mode and several filters to choose from. There is also the option for Ultra HD mode for better details in low light along with others such as mirrored selfie, a colourful night mode for those who want to capture some colour at night, Panorama, HDR, audio photo and time-lapse. You can clear and lighten your skin tone and give it a naturally glam look with the Beautify mode. You can adjust the brightness and ensure your selfies don’t appear dull in low light using the Screen flash feature on the front camera. Oppo R7: on the other hand, the OPPO R7 comes with an 8MP front-facing camera and a 13MP rear camera. The Oppo R7s doesn't handle images taken in low light conditions low light performance all too well; images lack the finer details. That is common even with high-end devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 or the iPhone 7. Other than that, both the front and rear cameras will take good pictures in places with enough lighting; they are pretty decent.

Display

Neo 7: let me start by pointing out that the Neo 7 doesn’t handle 1080p videos pretty well, the movie viewing experience on the Neo 7 wasn’t the best we’ve experienced. What’s interesting is the inclusion of an eye protection feature on the 960 x 540 resolution 5-inch QHD display that adds some tint to protect your eyes. The device comes with a lot of space above and below the 5-inch QHD screen. R7s: The dual-SIM OPPO R7s features a 5-inch HD AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The R7s applies software-based buttons for Home and Menu, Back, freeing up more space to further slim down the phone. Oppo appears to have moved on from having physical touch sensors on the bottom bezel. Though by not much, the Oppo R7s appears to be a little thinner and a bit smaller and interestingly enough, it doesn't need the extra space at the bottom for the neo 7’s home button and Touch ID sensor.

  Performance

Neo 7: The OPPO Neo 7 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 processor. We did experience stutter for a few moments, but the overall gaming experience was quite good. The device doesn't experience any heating issues, while we played or streamed music but the speakers sounded pretty average. We did try some casual games like Temple Run, Subway Surfer and a few shooting games. Network reception and voice call quality was impressive regarding the basic call functionality. Loading an image heavy site takes some time, probably due to the 1GB RAM. The device doesn’t appear to have any issues while switching from one app to another. R7s: This processing package is similar to the Neo 7, except the benefit of an extra amount of RAM that the R7s has. Backed by the 4 GB of RAM and Adreno 405 GPU, the OPPO R7s sports an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor set at 1.5 GHz under the hood. The overall experience remains smooth save for a few stutters in animations here and there. The device handles everything very well from gaming and multitasking, switching between apps and closing and the opening of applications.

  Software

Neo 7: The OPPO Neo 7 runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with OPPO’s Colour OS 2.1 on top. The device is swift and smooth to use because the company did not add too much bloat ware. The device allows a different mood setting every time you open it through the lock screen magazine feature that switches the screen saver every time you unlock the device. All your apps are placed across the windows, no app drawer. R7s: The OPPO R7s is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop and Colour OS 2.1, just like the Neo 7. It is the simplicity that sets it apart. All the animations seen throughout the UI allows for a very smooth and enjoyable software experience, and they all have a unified look and feel.

Availability and Price in Kenya
